In 2023 we established our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group (RWG) consisting of Executive Sponsor, Naraya Lamert, Chair, Renee Magee, and a 25-member strong group with representatives from each of our offices. Following an extensive consultation process with contributors including First Nations-led stakeholders, we were delighted to see the launch of Wotton Kearney's inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in July 2023.
Our RAP reflects our commitment to transformation and shows how we intend to stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to build a better future for everyone. The RAP outlines a pathway for having a positive impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities by improving access to the legal system, being culturally aware as lawyers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ needs, and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ employment initiatives and enterprises to maximise business opportunities.
We hosted a firm RAP launch coinciding with NAIDOC Week, where we were joined by the Justice and Equity Centre's (formerly Public Interest Advocacy Centre) CEO, Jonathon Hunyor, and lawyer and Ngemba man, Corey Smith, speaking about the importance of reconciliation and the referendum on the Voice to Parliament.
In recognition of 2024's theme for National Reconciliation Week, ‘Now More Than Ever’, we were delighted to be joined by Rhys and Emma of Acknowledge This! to learn about Acknowledgments of Country and ways we can meaningfully support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereignty and self-determination.
More than 100 of our people joined Rhys and Emma to learn what practical steps we can take to stand and act with First Nations people. As part of our RAP deliverables, we also shared our inclusive language guide which recognises that the way we speak about reconciliation is just as important as the ways we act.
